Mary Frances Hanna Carter

Mary Frances Carter was born on March 25th, 1934 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and transitioned on April 15th, 2024. She was the wife of the late Walter Allen (Tony) Carter.

The fifth of eight children and second of three daughters to Owen W. and Mary E. Hanna. Mary matriculated through the school system of Coatesville, PA and graduated from Scott High School. After leaving school Mary worked at Atkinson Hospital (owned and operated by Blacks; Harrisburg Hospital where she earned her L.P.N. certification. She also worked at the VA Hospital in Coatesville and Valley Forge before moving on to work as an Assistant to the Engineer and purchasing agent for Litton Industries (Clifton Precision) She ended her lengthy employment chapter her in 1996. Around 2012, Mary return yet again to the work force at Mercy Fitz Gerald Hospital in Darby, PA in the environmental services for four more years. Her love for children no doubt led her to her final career choice as a school crossing guard for Yeadon Borough. Her services were recognized on numerous occasions from the Borough. She was known to drive a child to school if they missed the school bus.

Mary was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Lansdowne, PA. She held many titles within the church. This included being a member of the Stewardess Board, Trustee, Gospel Chorus, Chancellor Choir, Hospitality and Class Leader.

She a member of the Interstate Amateur Roller-Skating League of America, Inc. and has won many dance and skating awards and trophies. She enjoyed bowling and was an avid reader and loved to sing. Mary would be heard singing day or night.

She was a member of Ruth Chapter Number 66 the Order of the Eastern Star Philadelphia Prince Hall Incorporated. Mary’s Prince Hall Fraternal involvement: Past Matron, Ruth Chapter No. 66 Order of Eastern Star,-Past Most Ancient Matron, Persha Court NO. 32, Heroines Of Jericho, - Past Royal Perfect Matron, Philadelphia Court No. 1, Ladies Of The Circle Of Perfection (Honorary Past Grand Royal Perfect Matron),-Past Commandress, St. James Court No.1 l, Order of Cyrene (Served 2 years and is Honorary Past Royal Grand Commandress), Past Loyal Lady Ruler, Chester Assembly No. 30, Order of Golden Circle, and a member of Minaret Court No. 154,

Daughters of Isis. Mary was also an honorary member of Ruth Mitchell Tucker girls Youth Department Unit No. 66.

Mary’s legacy remains with her brothers, William Owen Hanna, Carter Hanna, Stewart Barkley Hanna and Sisters, Linda Hanna, and Anita Hanna. Her four children, through her marriage to Tony, Anthony V Carter Sr, Brenda R Carter, Areetha M Carter; six Grand Children, Anthony V Carter Jr., Ebony L Carter, Areetha R Carter, Deon Carter (preceded her in death), and (Twins) Hashaan E. and Rashaan E. Carter; Great Grand Children, Deon M Carter, Emanuel T. Carter, Taquan N. Sykes, Devonte' R. Carter, Brianna Carter, Kevon J. Carter, Tristian Berry, and Zoey R Carter; Great-Great Grandchildren, Nadir Carter; Daughter-in-law, Francine D Lane; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
