Lula Mae Pettiford-Couch went home to be with the Lord on March 18th 2021 at age 82. She was surrounded by her family and passed away peacefully.
Lula Mae was born on January 7th 1939 to the late Jimmie and Lizzie Chisolm in Luray, South Carolina. She was the oldest daughter of 8 children. Lula moved to Jersey City as a young adult and married in 1956.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, Lula also followed her passion and became a full-time seamstress, eventually retiring from Boeing Helicopters. She excelled at engaging family, supporting her children, and working in the Church. She made it her mission to improve the lives of others and travel the world.
Throughout Lula’s entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. She played active roles in her church, which included Memberships to the Scholarship Committee, Busy Bees, the Prayer Band as well as a Sunday School Teacher, Sewing Instructor, and served as Mother of the church. She was a member of St. Luke C.C Christian Church for many years, and Temple of Prayer. She most recently joined Highway Church of Christ Pillar & Ground of Truth where she felt at home.
Our mother, Lula was one of the strongest, most courageous, and loving women to ever walk this earth and our family was blessed to have her as the head of the family. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill.
Lula joins her sons Charles “Junebug” and Edward “Omar” Pettiford in Heaven. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters Evangela “Vangie” Redfern (Tracy Redfern), Sandra Pettiford-Stevenson, and Tammy Pettiford; niece/daughter Loreitha Lacewell; sisters Ida Whitehurst, Rebecca Jerrell; brother Eugene Chisolm; Uncle Willie Pollin (Leslie Pollin); grandchildren Kendolyn Jefferson, Shakia Pettiford, Marva Pettiford, Omar Pettiford, Lamar Pettiford, Martina Pettiford, Jamar Pettiford; in-laws Lacie Chisolm, Carol Chisolm, Demarest Chisolm, James Lacewell.
