God saw the road was getting rough, and the hills hard to
climb. He gently took her into his arms and whispered,
“Peace Be Thine.” God, in his innite wisdom, suddenly
and without notice, granted his eternal peace to Lillie R.
Scurry on Saturday, December 12, 2020.
Lillie R. Scurry, a'ectionately known by her family as
Yowee, of Chester, Pennsylvania was born in Cairo, Georgia
on November 10, 1936. She was born to the late Willie and
Mattie Scurry. She was the youngest of eight children. She
grew up in Bainbridge, Georgia. Lillie was baptized and
became a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. Lillie
was educated in Chester and Georgia Schools and was a
drum majorette while there. She graduated from Keystone
Business School.
Lillie spent her early years in Chester, PA, moved to New
York, and worked as a seamstress at Weiss and Klau
Textile Company. She moved back to Chester and was
employed by Scott Paper Company for twenty-ve years as
a Data Systems Administrator. Lillie was a dedicated hard-
worker and loved her job.
Lillie attended Temple Baptist Church and Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church in Chester, PA. Lillie had many
hobbies. She loved solving jigsaw and crossword puzzles.
She loved sewing. One of her favorite pastimes was playing
the piano. She had great joy collecting coins with her
grandchildren. She was a great storyteller of the many
youthful adventures growing up with her siblings. She also
gave great advice when it was needed. Lillie loved hosting
and celebrating birthdays and spending time with her
family. She enjoyed her summers at the Atlantic City
Boardwalk. Lillie took great pride in raising her four
daughters. Lillie valued education and made certain her
daughters had many books to read while growing up. She
taught them to trust in God, be independent, respectful,
and to always do their best.
Lillie was predeceased by her parents Willie and Mattie
Scurry, and her siblings, Ben Scurry, Louise Burchett, Erie
Jane Harris, Charles (C) Scurry, Willie (June) Scurry, Maude
Willis and John Scurry, three nephews Rufus Scurry,
Charles (Chucky) Scurry, Leroy Harris and niece-in-law
Agnes Harris.
Lillie leaves four daughters to cherish her memory: Phyllis
Beckwith (David), Lisa Taylor, Lenora Scurry and Marlo
Scurry, all in Chester, Pennsylvania. She leaves eight
grandchildren: Tanya Walker- Lamar (Rashon), Lakia
Beckwith, Kristan Waters, Jada Beckwith- Freeman (Ivan),
Nathan Waters IV, Aaron Allen, Benita Beckwith and
Marcus Springeld. Thirteen great grandchildren, two
nephews, Anthony Scurry, Albert Willis Jr., two nieces,
Elaine Corbin, Gwendolyn Cauthorn (Frank), one niece-in-
law, Jeanette Scurry; as well as a host of nieces, nephews,
and other relatives, friends and neighbors.
