Garrett Smith Jr Obituary

Garrett H. Smith, Jr., was born on December 14, 1964 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Garrett H. Smith, Sr., and Karen Rogers Smith of Yeadon, Pennsylvania. He was the 2nd oldest of 6 children. He was predeceased by his brother John B. Smith of Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Garrett was raised and lived in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Close family and friends addressed him by his nickname “Gaylord” which was his father’s nickname when he was younger.

Garrett suffered a traumatic brain injury at birth from the use of forceps which left him disabled. During his childhood he spent a significant amount of time at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia until his health was finally stabilized around the age of 12. His mother made certain he was able to participate and enjoy an active life despite his disabilities. He was responsible for doing chores just like his siblings such as taking out the trash and washing dishes. Our mother regularly shared “the doctors said if he lives beyond the age of 5, he would be a miracle!” Garrert would’ve been 60 years old in December.. He spent decades attending Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with his mother.

His mother sought every resource available to enhance his life. He’s been under the guidance and support of the Delaware County Office of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities for decades. Not only did this office provide resources, they provided oversight, coordinated and oversaw his care for decades. Garrett was educated through the Delaware County Intermediate Unit and was an active participant in the Special Olympics for many years.

Garrett was an active member of Elwyn’s Day Program for 4 decades. He was employed for over 20 years through Elwyn where he was responsible for filling envelopes. Although his weekly paychecks were under $3.00, he took pride in telling his younger siblings “I work, you don’t work, you need to stop sitting around and get a job like me!” Garrett was legally blind. However, he had a special gift and could put together a 1000 piece puzzle over the course of several hours just by feeling the pieces. At the end of the day, he would take the entire puzzle apart just so he could start from scratch in the morning. He remembered everyone’s birthday. He loved snacks, donuts, the Price is Right and cartoons. He thoroughly enjoyed laughing and joking around with others.

After his mother’s death in 2012, Garrett lived with his sister for a few years before residing in the community under Elwyn. He enjoyed his independence and thrived amongst his peers. Garrett enjoyed trips to the beach, Zoo, Baltimore Harbour, the Aquarium, weekly swimming at the YMCA, regular trips to the Mall, Dollar Store and the Supermarket to do his food shopping. He resided at Fair Acres Geriatic Center in recent years when his health began to decline. Garrett adored his staff who spoiled, nurtured and cared for him with love and compassion.

Garrett leaves to cherish his memory: 4 siblings; Crystal Smith, Sally Smith Brown, Tiffany Smith Robbins and James Smith. His maternal uncle Leroy Pete Rogers, brother in law Vincent Robbins. Nieces: Cristine, Daniell, Melanie. Nephews: Kierre, Karon, Da’Shay and John, Jr., a host of great nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
